We are excited to be embarking on another medical mission this October. The need is tremendous and the community eagerly awaits our visit. This mission will incorporate breast, cervical, and prostate cancer screening. In resource poor nations, cancer screening is a luxury; hence frequent stage 4 cancer diagnoses and poor outcomes. We will be collaborating with the First Lady’s NGO Africa Cancer Foundation.
Pain is a symptom that is usually under-managed and never a priority. For example, we have witnessed a child with sickle cell cry helplessly without intervention. New initiatives such as teaching and implementing a noninvasive pain management technique (battlefield acupuncture) is the plan. Battlefield acupuncture is an effective non invasive, painless, cost effective procedure. We also plan on bringing diagnostics such as portable ultrasound and EKG. Such diagnostics are out of reach for many in marginalized areas. Dentistry will also be incorporated during this trip. A common theme among those with dental pain was lack of money to access care. Last but not least, nurse educators will be ready to educate and empower the community. Most importantly, we collaborate with local health professionals and community members for a learning experience and continuity of care. The mission will be concluded with a world class safari and stay at the Maasai Mara that will take place during the last 3 days.
