MERCY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Population:
The staggering statistics by UNICEF show that despite improvements in sub-Saharan Africa in recent decades, 1 in 13 children die under the age of five, compared to 1 in 195 in developed nations. Infectious diseases (such as pneumonia, malaria, and diarrheal diseases) constitute the most common cause of death in children under the age of five years old. If this trend continues, 31 million children under the age of five will die in Africa by the year 2030. Currently, sub-Saharan Africa has 3 public children’s hospitals (two of those located in South Africa) to cater to the continent’s 450 million children.
Intervention:
The proposed 500 bed state-of-the-art center for excellence in pediatric healthcare is slated to be the first mission hospital of its kind in Nyanza-Kenya and East Africa. We envision an accessible, affordable children’s hospital that delivers compassionate, quality care to the entire East African region. The hospital will also include a maternity wing and an outpatient/primary care building dedicated to keeping children and pregnant women in the community healthy.
Outcome:
When compared to previous years, the expectation is that mortality rates will improve among children
under 5 years old due to timely access to affordable medical services/medications and an overall
healthier population due to access to affordable primary care services. Primary care consists of education, early intervention, and surveillance.
Budget:
Phase 1 – $1 million USD
Outpatient Building – consisting of primary care services such as dental, ophthalmology, mental health, immunizations, & general practitioners.
Phase 2 – $80 million USD
Inpatient Building & Diagnostics – consisting of ER and inpatient units such as med-surg, critical care, OR, newborn nursery, and oncology.
Proposal available on request.

The opportunity to go to the Philippines (Tagum City) to do humanitarian work as well as evangelize presented itself in November 2019 and we couldn’t have been more enthusiastic. For one, the Philippines is a beautiful tropical country in the Asian continent. Second, authentic Philippino food is amazing! The only downside to the trip was long flight times (15 hours nonstop from New York).
Upon arrival, reality set in. One couldn’t help but notice abject poverty in the city of Manila. This worsened as we ventured out into rural areas such as Tagum City. It was quite disheartening to say the least. Why is a country so rich in culture and nature wallowing in poverty? Such questions ran through our minds, as we had ignorantly expected to witness such levels of poverty maybe only in remote parts of Africa. However, poverty knows no color, race, or geographical location.
We partnered with Face of Joy Charity to distribute rice to over 400 families in need. The people in the Philippines value rice more than any other commodity. Oral health education was conducted where children were educated on good oral hygiene and then given dental kits containing a toothbrush and toothpaste.
As the masses came out for services, we took the opportunity to spread the good news of the gospel of Jesus, and many gave their lives to Christ. The power of God was evident as many were miraculously healed and those who were oppressed were set free. On the last day, we were featured at a Christian radio station in Tagum City. Lastly, we couldn’t leave the country with the most beautiful beaches without having a beach day!
As a result of this trip, we now have a family in the Philippines and they cannot wait to welcome us back. The people of the Philippines are beautiful and very friendly! Oh, and they love taking pictures!
